Yi Peng lantern festival in Northern Thailand. For Northern Thai Buddhists, this is a time to make merit and receive blessing during a long ceremony and lantern release.

In 2012 my wife and I attended the Yi Peng lantern festival. We arrived several hours before the ceremony started to make sure we had a place to sit. Even then we barely found an open space. By the time the festival started, there were thousands of people all with their paper lanterns. After the lengthy Buddhist ceremony, the lighting torches were lit all around the ceremony grounds. While many people released their lanterns before the mass-release, the majority waited until the signal was given, and all at once there were thousands upon thousands of lanterns lighting up the sky. It was overwhelmingly beautiful.
