There is Life

Our small team was able to make food to distribute to those displaced by Nepal’s 2015 earthquake.

I have to admit that I struggle with the idea of the Western “white savior” coming in and “saving poor helpless people.”¬†We don’t need more of that mindset in cross-cultural work. However, I felt it was important to see that among the fallen buildings and fallen faces, and despite what mainstream news showed the rest of the world, there was still life. In shooting and editing I wanted to focus more on Nepali faces and less on Westerners because we Westerners don’t need to feed our need for acknowledgement and attention. We didn’t save the day by any stretch of the imagination, but a few people were less hungry, and that’s a good thing.
